Planners Comments
I seem to have fallen into the common trap of planning an event in Winter and then being so surprised how different it is on the day. It must be a bumper year for bracken and brambles. I knew the harder courses would have some long times when I couldn"t find my tags after emerging from my campervan at 4am. So I feel an apology is due to the light green course competitors where the undergrowth made controls 5 & 9 on the hard side for TD4. The undergrowth probably made the blue more like a brown.
It was nice to see so many schools taking part and waiting for prize giving. It was difficult to estimate pre marked maps; we were short of the easier courses and had many spares on the longer courses. As we used professional printers we had to estimate competitors before we had any indication of numbers. We thought it was fairer to recycle maps rather than have later competitors use the master map system. We"ve a few medals left for those who weren"t able to stay for the prize giving, I"ll try to get them out asap.
Thanks to Guy & Judith for helping to attack the brambles etc (we did try honestly) and for the nice comments (those who were critical were probably too exhausted to complain). Thanks to Tim Boden, your controller, for his patience.

Organisers Comments
I've organised events at Haw Park in the past but they've always been in the depths of winter and I was amazed this year by the height of the bracken. Rod had hacked two paths clear on the junior (orange) courses only a couple of weeks ago but on Saturday before the event they were overgrown again so Rod, my wife Judith and I spent Saturday afternoon clearing them once again. On the Sunday morning I was awoken at 6 o'clock by thunder and heavy rain and thought of poor Rod putting out the controls.
However it transpired that although it thundered around Haw Park at that time there was no heavy rain
And for the event the sun shone gloriously, perhaps too warm for comfortable orienteering!
My apologies to some of the late starters who did not get a drink at the finish but the drinks station wasn't manned and apparently some early finishers took more than one drink.
We hope everyone enjoyed the event especially the youngsters taking part in the Schools Championships for the first time. My thanks to all the gallant band of EPOC helpers, we were fairly stretched because a lot of EPOC were taking part in the Badge event in the Lakes on the same day.
Special thanks to Rod Shaw, the planner, Tim Boden the controller, Dave Mee & his staff at the Country Park for their cooperation and use of the discovery Centre and to Mr Goodwin for the use of the car parking field..
Looking forward to seeing you at our next badge event at Marsden on 19th of October.
