EPOC Newmillerdam Night Event
2nd Feb 2008
(A YHOA Night League Event)
Organiser’s Report
Although night orienteering isn’t as strong in EPOC as some of the other Yorkshire clubs we do have a small core of enthusiasts, so between us we can put on these events. Due to Paul’s innovative planning last year we had a new start and finish location for Newmillerdam away from the usual pay and display car park in the village. Fortunately this new spot had just enough space to have an assembly area big enough for the usual number of night event competitors which was ideal as we could have things close together and keep track of everyone.
The weather had been arctic in the proceeding 24 hours but we were blessed with a pleasant evening for the event although I had hoped that a dusting of snow might have remained. The event was a first for EPOC as we managed to use SI punching at our night event for the first time so hopefully we can continue this in the future.
It was nice to have a good turnout and everyone seemed to enjoy the event. We had a few technical problems which hopefully didn’t cause you any problems. Our generator refused to start so we had to rely on battery power for the Sportident kit and unfortunately the hot water boiler wouldn’t stay lit so we couldn’t offer the hot soup we planned for. (I will be living off Cup-a-Soup for quite a while !)
We had one casualty on the night with some gashed fingers after a bad fall although he still managed to finish his course. Hopefully things are on the mend and he’s back in the forest soon.
A big thankyou to Paul, Jack, Emma, John, James and Martin for their help and assistance on the night with all the various jobs which made the event go so smoothly.
Many thanks also to Tony Conway of Wakefield MDC for allowing us to use the area.
