Honley Old Woods

Planners' comments

Some of the planning constraints in Honley Wood (e.g. a narrow corridor and steep slopes) are fairly obvious so our main aim was, if possible, to provide an enjoyable run by visiting the best bits of woodland even though there might be relatively little route choice.

Only a few weeks ago, the dry beech woods, even including the steeper slopes, were fabulous to run through but, unfortunately, slipping, sliding and mud were the order of the day at the event itself. This might have affected some courses more than others. Whilst the course length for Green was appropriate, we acknowledge that it was quite a tough course and the wet conditions made it even tougher.

We were also aware that the course length on Brown, in particular, might be slightly on the short side but that it would be difficult to achieve a longer course without venturing beyond the road in the north-east corner of the map and incurring a lot of dead running to link to the additional area. Restricting ourselves to the area used on the day did mean inevitable crossovers and we deliberately tried to make these as clear as possible on the map. Apologies to those who found any of the lines or numbers near these crossovers confusing or misleading.

We would like to thank Charlie Adams, who controlled the event, for his helpful suggestions along the way and are pleased that most comments from competitors have been good-humoured. Generally, people did seem to enjoy their runs.
