Dick Spendlove, planner says the woods are delightful! Take care with the odd icy patches on the tracks and roads.

Elland Christmas Cracker Orienteering Event

(or Stealthily Seeking Santa!)

Sunday 20th December 2009

A 1hr Mass-Start (11am) Score Event with Seasonal Trimmings. Be sure to wear some tinsel in your hair!

VENUE: Elland Park Woods between Huddersfield and Halifax.  GR 115 225

PARKING: Marshall's Company car park at GR 110 235. Follow signs from the A 6025 at GR 136 232,  1.5 km West of Brighouse or from the A629 at GR 097 227, 2.5 km South of Halifax.

Not sure of toilets here yet. But we can use the ones at the cricket club.

REGISTRATION in the Car Park: From 09.30 to 10.30

EVENT: A 60 minute Score Event for all age groups. There will be 32 fixed controls, each control being worth 10 points. The controls may be visited in any order and it is not necessary to visit all of them. Most controls are technically easy. The furthest controls, however, are more technical and involve a lot of climb back to the finish - you have been warned! It is strongly recommended that juniors with limited experience be accompanied by an adult.
There are also 3 mobile controls masquerading as Santa, also worth 10 points each. They go by the names of Ho!, Ho, Ho! and Ho, Ho, Ho! and will be wandering through the area somewhere. You can only use your dibber once at each Santa! Health warning (1) to young children - these are imposters, the real Santa is much too busy. Health warning (2) - the Santa suits may contain nuts.

START:There will be a mass start at 11am precisely so don't be late - please try to be there by 10.50 at the latest. It will be a maximum of 15 minutes walk from the car park. On arriving at the start it is your responsibility to clear your dibber (we won't be using a check box). You will then be given a rolled/sealed map and you will pass through a gate into a holding area where you can also warm up. Maps are not to be opened until the start signal is given. Blank maps will be on display in the start area showing crossing points which must be used.

FINISH: Point scoring will stop at 12 o'clock precisely, 10 penalty points will be deducted from your score for each minute or part minute after this time. Download will be near the finish, not in the car park. Please bear with us if there is a queue for download! It will be a maximum of 15 minutes walk from finish/download back to the car park. We will start to remove controls from 12.15 onwards. The bar will open at the Cricket Club (finish) from 12 noon. Orienteers very welcome.

Start, finish and download are all at the cricket club.

FEES: Entry                      Senior  £5    Junior / Student  £2
Dibber Hire             Senior  £2   Junior / Student  50p

MAP: 1:10000  Waterproof. An X symbol signifies a pylon but no overhead wires are shown.

CONTROL DESCRIPTIONS: Pictorial, on the map and also available loose at Registration.

TERRAIN: Deciduous woodland and some holly on a steep sloping hillside, together with a network of walled fields. Marked crossing points should be used where these are indicated.

GENERAL NOTES / SAFETY: Competitors are responsible for their own safety, lone entrants should leave their details at Registration and adopt a buddy to act for them in the case of emergency.

The Event is designed to cater for all abilities and whilst the controls are technically easy the area is physically demanding in parts and it is strongly recommended that juniors with limited experience be accompanied by an adult.

Planner: Dick Spendlove
Organiser: Brian Mellor
Controller: Judith Wood PFO

APRES-O: Competitors are welcome to visit the Cricket Club Bar after their run. It opens at Noon.

You may want to visit the Ice Sculpture Trail in Halifax town centre, which is on all day. There is also ice skating in the Piece Hall in Halifax.
