Holmfirth
Regional Urban Orienteering Event
Controller's comments
Well done to Alistair for planning this event at relatively short notice and
without a detailed map for most of the planning time. From the comments everyone
seemed to enjoy their Last of the Summer Wine experience.
Clearly planning an event in Holmfirth is not easy as anyone looking at the
map can see. Most of the roads and tracks follow the contours with surprising
few links between them. Once you do link the two, the height climb increases.
Unfortunately the uncertainty of the size and requirement of the gala reduced
some of the planning options. It is also surprising how busy the main roads
are and crossing them several times can be a bit scary. All these issues reduced
the route choice options for Alistair.
Next time we will make sure the gala is not on the same day ensuring that the
majority of the courses are in the town centre.
Finally thanks to Chris Owens of Dee the first starter who reported a problem
with one of the controls which cost him a couple of minutes compared to everyone
else on course 2.
