Norland Moor Event, Middle Distance Event, Sunday 12th Feb 2011
Travel directions: Postcode for SatNavs HX6 3RN. Streetmap. The event will be signposted on the B6113 Ripponden to Elland road coming from the west at SE 053 202 (Butterworth End Lane) and at Turbury Lane (SE 077 213) coming from the east. Anyone approaching via Sowerby Bridge should note that these approach roads are both steep and narrow and only suitable for cars. They will not be signposted but the recommended route is via the eastern end of Sowerby Bridge, just beyond the traffic lights into Wakefield Rd (Walker Lane, Canal Rd., Fall Lane, London Rd., sharp right hairpin bend into Norland Town Rd.)
Parking: If the weather has been dry or the ground is frozen, we shall be parking in a gently sloping grass field (site of registration/toilets/start/download) near the centre of the village (SE 065 225). The adjacent public car park must not be used.
However, in wet conditions we will have to use road side parking along Norland Town Rd., Stormer Hill Lane and Norland Rd. Please park as directed and be aware that you will be between 250m and 800m from registration and the start, so allow time.
Map: 1:7500 resurveyed autumn 2010 by David Roome. A4 waterproof. Control descriptions on the map and loose copies in start lanes
Terrain:Open heather moorland with pockets of complex contour and rock detail. Please be aware that the moor is popular with dog walkers, joggers and mountain bikers and show courtesy to other users.
Safety: THE FREEZING RAIN ON THURSDAY COATED MOST OF THE EXPOSED ROCK WITH ICE - PLEASE TAKE EXTREME CARE AS IT IS STILL PRESENT IN PLACES. Norland Moor is exposed terrain at an average of 250m (800ft) above sea level. Whistles and cagoules must be carried. Please take extra care in the old quarried areas where there are steep drops. We will be operating the 'buddy' system -please make sure you have a reliable person who can raise the alarm if you seem to be very late finishing. Lone competitors should leave their car keys, registration number and name at registration.
