Halifax South

Urban 'Sprint' Orienteering Event

Regional Event

Saturday 30 June 2018

Map snip

EPOC are organising an event in Halifax South prior to the UK Urban League to be held the next day.

Due to circumstances beyond our control we have had to find a new registration venue for this event and have had to change the planned Urban event to a single Urban Sprint. Courses will be longer than for a usual sprint as there is no Prologue and Final.

Registration at: All Saints Church. Dudwell Lane, Halifax HX3 0SD

Directions: Road side Parking free on Saturdays but look out for Permit Parking restrictions. Enquiries, start, finish, download, results and 2 toilets will be in the Church. Streetmap
Toilets: There are only two toilets in the Church. If you are approaching from the West side of Halifax, Tesco can be seen on your left hand side and if approaching from Huddersfield you will pass MacDonalds at the bottom of the hill as you approach Dudwell Lane.  In case you are desperate and it is an emergency you do pass A & E on the way to the church.

Area map details

No Dogs in the church or church yard.

Directions from the M62
Leave the Motorway at Junction 24 and take the A629 towards Halifax for 4 miles passing MacDonalds/Shell SS at the bottom of a steep hill (Salterhebble). At the top of the hill turn left in front of the Calderdale Royal hospital along Dudwell Lane for .75km (passing A & E on right!). The church has a large spire, which can clearly be seen.
From Halifax Centre take A629 signed Huddersfield for 2km. Look out for Calderdale Royal Hospital on right and turn right at next Traffic Lights on to Dudwell Lane then as above.

In order to accommodate those travelling a long way, the Registration and start times have been put back 1hr.

Registration: 1pm - 3.00pm
EOD only: £7.00 (Non BOF Members £9.00) Juniors £4.00

Fabulous Prizes!? for those first in each age group - if you cannot stay to collect yours, they will be at Registration/Download on the following day at the UKUL.

As there is only one race (not a prologue and final) and if you feel you have not done enough running you can non-competitively do another course. Complete another Registration form so we know you are out running and you will be allocated an EPOC dibber for this run. Only your first result counts. Do not use the same dibber for your second run otherwise it will overwrite your first run.

Starts: 1.30 - 3.30pm
There will be an open punching start. Start officials will organise queues behind each course start at -3 minutes and release people at 1 minute intervals.  Loose control descriptions will be available at registration. All Courses will use IOF Standard description format.

Course Closing Time: 4.30 pm

Safety:  While we have carried out full risk assessments of the competition areas and put in place any mitigation of the risks we found, please be aware that you take part at your own risk.
Please be aware of all traffic, pedestrians and other competitors. It is a good principle, to pass other runners to the left. The courses pass through all types of urban environment with a wide range of underfoot conditions. Wet Yorkshire cobbles are very slippery. Competitors who are travelling alone are advised to leave named car keys at enquiries. All competitors must download as soon as possible at the end of their run whether they have completed their course or not.
There is a wide road crossing which will be used by under 16’s.  There will be a control on either side and the crossing will be marshalled.

Terrain: Urban Orienteering consisting of ginnels, yards, Victorian parkland, terraced streets, alleyways and modern suburban estates. Hilly, of course.
The ISSOM forbidden crossing symbol for fences, walls, buildings and vegetation must be strictly adhered to.

Map: Map used for our 2015 event by Richard Payne EPOC. 1:5000 with 5m contours.
ISSOM standard symbols. Additional symbol X = man made feature such as seat or bus stop. O = Lampost/signpost. All maps are printed on waterproof paper and will not be bagged.
Control Sites: All control sites will be marked with a conventional kite. The SIAC unit and kite will be attached with a wire gripple.

Electronic punching: SportIdent SIAC equipment is being used. SI cards (dibbers) are available for hire for £1. There are no SIAC dibbers available for hire.

SI Download: As a Safety check, the Finish control must be punched.  After punching the finish control please download as soon as possible. Hired SI cards will be collected. Should you lose your SI card, or fail to return it, you will be charged the full price of a replacement (£30).

Please make your own way back to All Saints Church from the finish making use of  the island in the road adjacent to the church (300mts).

Spot Prizes.

Shadowing Juniors: Juniors may be shadowed only after you have completed your own course.
Results:  Results will be on display in the assembly area and via the EPOC website.

Clothing: Footwear choice to take into account slippery cobbles and pavements. There will be no arm and leg cover requirements.

Drinks: Bottles of Water at the Finish.

First Aid: Members of EPOC who have completed First Aid training.
Hospitals: Calderdale Royal Hospital is within 5 mins of the assembly area and has a full A&E department.
