Comment by Guy Goodair of EPOC. Submitted at 08:04 on Friday 9-Feb-2007. SUBJECT: Route Gadget Fascinating to look at the various routes taken by competitors and not least the variation in distance Looking at blue for example Paul Bradbury ran 1.5 km more than the winner - that's over 25% further! |
|
Comment by Anthony Greenwood of EPOC. Submitted at 22:02 on Tuesday 6-Feb-2007. SUBJECT: Route Gadget Route Gadget is up and running!. Within 5 mins I noticed three people had already added their routes. I thought it was brilliant how Chris Littler and I chose totally different routes, Chris had a major error, but we finished almost together! |

Comment by Andis of Latvia. Submitted at 19:45 on Tuesday 6-Feb-2007. SUBJECT: Thanx Thanks organisers and planners for great event. It was only my 3rd orienteering run in England, but at this moment the best, I enjoyed this run fully. Excellent planning for Blue course, so many variant how I need get to next point, that let me thinking about my orienteering quality :))) Specially for me liking distance from 11 to 15. It will be great if this map been on Route Gadget. |

Comment by Guy Goodair of EPOC. Submitted at 10:37 on Tuesday 6-Feb-2007. SUBJECT: Haw Park Frank Sorry you missed the event - we did make it clear that there would be no 'o' signs on both the flyer and website. and I would think you asked directions for 'Haw Park' Not many Wakefield people know it as Haw Park -if you'd asked for 'Anglers Country Park' or 'Waterton DIscover Centre' you would have stood a better chance. |

Comment by Anthony G of EPOC. Submitted at 08:50 on Tuesday 6-Feb-2007. SUBJECT: Route Gadget I am trying to get RG running. Because the results needed sorting out, the final file I need is not quite available. I hope to do it, so everyone please keep watching, and put your routes on if and when.... |

Comment by Mike Winter of AIRE. Submitted at 07:50 on Tuesday 6-Feb-2007. SUBJECT: Route Gadget There was mention of a possibility of route gadget for this event on the website yesterday before the results were posted... Any chance of this happening? Thanks |

Comment by Frank Kew of Aire. Submitted at 23:32 on Monday 5-Feb-2007. SUBJECT: Haw )Park Would have appreciated some O-signs to the event!!!! It was my fault for not taking the FULL directions to Haw Park with me - but I spent a fruitless 45 minutes trying to find the event (and must have asked a dozen people whether they knew where Haw Park is!!) , before turning disconsolately for home. Still, I had a nice run on Otley Chevin on the way home. Frank Kew |

Comment by Andrew Kelly of Aire. Submitted at 18:51 on Monday 5-Feb-2007. SUBJECT: 11-12 David - yes, using the small path off the bend to get through the green and then swinging north once through. |
|
Comment by Michael Hood of SELOC. Submitted at 18:40 on Monday 5-Feb-2007. I went direct from 12-13 on GREEN - I reckoned it would be faster to locate 13 before crossing, then I discovered how muddy it was - probably still quicker though |
|
Comment by Rod Ryall of EPOC. Submitted at 17:21 on Monday 5-Feb-2007. SUBJECT: The Canal I was very suprised by the water in the 'dry' canal, taking the direct route from 12 to 13 on green - and I'm the mapper! Honest - it was bone dry at the turn of the year. Hope it didn't spoil any runs - anyway at this time of year you don't feel you've had a proper event if you end up with your feet still dry. |

Comment by David McCann of MDOC. Submitted at 14:29 on Monday 5-Feb-2007. SUBJECT: 11-12 Andrew, on 11-12 did you drop South a bit to the paths heading generally West then attack from the bend of the big track? 14-15, it depends if you just went for the crossing or dithered, but I reckon round would be better for most. For an oldie like me slogging through the mud and then up the bank left me out of breath for the next leg. |

Comment by Andrew Kelly of Aire. Submitted at 13:04 on Monday 5-Feb-2007. I went straight too on 4-5, but found the approach more clogged than I expected (missed the thicker undergrowth symbol inside the lighter undergrowth), which slowed me down a fair bit. It might have been marginally quicker, but the round route was more secure with a slicker final approach. However, it meant that I was much more secure on 11-12, when I took a very similar route, and had already seen the control on the previous run through. So what I lost to going round on 4-5 I probably gained back on 11-12. 14-15 I set off with 2 others. Going round, I saw them still negotiating the canal as I came into punch, so reckon round was quicker (at least for me). |
|
Comment by Rob Campbell of CLOK. Submitted at 11:41 on Monday 5-Feb-2007. SUBJECT: Blue - 4 to 5 i went 'straight' on the minor paths and then cutting through the planted forest and down to the re-entrant - but i missed it slightly going too far right - looking now it is just over a 1k on the paths - i did 4.21 going across - i might have just nipped it going round though it would be a close run thing (3.45 is 6 min-miling) |
|
Comment by David McCann of MDOC. Submitted at 11:38 on Monday 5-Feb-2007. Mike, 4-5 by the towpath looks quite a good choice, 250 m longer but less in the rough, I took much the same route as you and the brambles to the South of 5 were quite thick. If you said something about prefering to see rocks in streams when crossing the canal then it was you. I think 14-15 would have been quicker going round, certainly drier and probably better prepared for heading off to 16. |

Comment by jonathan emberton of epoc. Submitted at 10:22 on Monday 5-Feb-2007. SUBJECT: three in a row emma's planning at yesterday's haw park event matched the excellent standard set by andy thorpe at storthes hall on christmas eve and dicky wren last summer at honley .... all have made great use of small, wooded, generally runnable areas and show what quality district events epoc stage with their good stock of digital maps, the use of e punching and thoughtful planners... very enjoyable |

Comment by Mike Winter of AIRE. Submitted at 09:47 on Monday 5-Feb-2007. Congratulations on an excellent event. As others have already said, great planning in a small area to create a good blue course. David, I think it was me that went ahead of you across the 'dry' canal. I also crossed it twice on the 2-3 and 14-15 legs. On blue 4-5 did anyone run round the canal path? I went straighter using the minor paths and cut down the gully and re-entrant, but on looking at the map last night, reckoned that the towpath might have been quicker.. My split was 6:58. |
|
Comment by David McCann of MDOC. Submitted at 09:06 on Monday 5-Feb-2007. I enjoyed Haw Park more than the previous week at Sherwood Pines as there was much less flat out track running and much more route choice. I crossed the "dry" canal twice, on 2-3 and also going direct 14-15 although I did hesitate a bit more as it looked a bit deeper than the earlier crossing where I had the benefit of someone else testing the depth. A club colleague went round to 15 and did exactly the same time 1.52. |

Comment by Rob Campbell of CLOK. Submitted at 21:01 on Sunday 4-Feb-2007. Travelled 150 miles for this event(well was on way back home from Cambridge), got into a scrap in the car close to the parking (went into back of white van man) but had fantastic run on a lovely area with a great map on a day to be living! Well done for the Blue - lots of interesting legs and not too much path running really (went direct to 12 and 15). Thanks to all |

Comment by Andy Thorpe of EPOC. Submitted at 18:52 on Sunday 4-Feb-2007. SUBJECT: Great Event Thanks to Emma and Guy and everyone else who helped to make this a really enjoyable event. I agree that the planning was excellent - you could really tell that a lot of thought had gone into the blue course, especially. Most interesting legs for me were 2-3, 4-5, 10-11, 11-12,15-16. I did a healthy mixture of path running and running straight. Considering the fairly limited (mapped) areas we have in Calderdale/Kirklees/Wakefield, I think EPOC puts on as good a district event as any other club. |

Comment by Andrew Kelly of Aire. Submitted at 18:20 on Sunday 4-Feb-2007. Agree about the planning - it was excellent. Particularly appreciated the fact that even in such a tiny area, there were some excellent route choice legs (BTW did anybody else go round on Blue no. 15?). This is one where Route Gadget would add greatly to post event enjoyment (will it be available?). |
