SUBJECT:   The End
Thanks to all for your comments re the event. I am just a little sad that most competitors seem to not be interested in putting their routes on route gadget. Course 7 has only attracted me and one other, so it loses its point a bit. The fastest on the course have not bothered, perhaps they don't want to show me the way I should have gone?
I will probably close this Bulletin Board tonight, or tomorrow.
Thanks again!

SUBJECT:   Map Reading on Course 4
Despite my incredibly poor time in my first ever M40S - one lesson I learnt is how the scale of the map differs from non-orienteering maps! (I ran well past control 11 and ended up in the Warland Drain).
However, it seems I am much more highly skilled in using OS maps, because I found the location of the event itself extremely easily, unlike some apparently. I would like to thank the organisers for making my first event go so smoothly (except the tussocks of course) and encouraging me in my new sport.

Well we found it OK!  But we didn't read the instructions, just looked the grid ref up on streetmap.co.uk.  Maybe the online details could include a link to streetmap, so everyone can be sure where it is?

Anyway, thanks for a superb day, I did my best ever on course 2 despite getting lost several times, must be fitter than last year.  Just a shame you couldn't manage some atrocious weather, it would have been good training for this weekend's OMM.

As for the Xmas event, another vote for a 'real' event rather than a 'fun score'.  Apart from anything else, it's too far to drive for just an hour.

SUBJECT:   Event location
After initially feeling quite bad about the confusion which some people experienced in finding the Event I have thought about it further and now believe that the information which we provided was basically sound. What people have done erroneously is to link the '6km'in the indication of the general location of the event to the 'A646' in the travel directions and assumed incorrectly that the turning point off this road must be at 6km distant from Halifax, a classic case of 2+2=5.The Grid References given in both these items were however absolutely correct.
Nevertheless we have said that we will refund Fees paid by any pre-entrant who could'nt find the Event and stand by this.Similarly we will refund reasonable costs for the charter of sea going vessels etc for those competitors who searched for the Event without success in the North Sea

I likewise drove from Halifax to Hebden Bridge and back twice before giving up looking for an event indication due to time constraints! A refund would be appreciated in the circumstances. With web entries it would be relatively easy to let us know if the information you have published is incorrect

Steve

Try this to display the map:

With Internet Explorer open click Tools/Internet Options/Advanced Settings" scroll down then tick the box  "Use Java 2 v 1.4.0 - 1"  Click on the "Security" tab. Click on the button "Custom Level". Scroll down the list of security settings until you find "Java: Java permissions". Make sure that java is not disabled, and that the security is not too high.

SUBJECT:   route gadget and score events
updated java but still doesn't work - shame as I have enjoyed using route gadget - maybe Jenny and Oli will sort it out for me at Christmas! As for score events, I don't like them. I like technical courses and I'm very competitive. To try and win a score event I plan a route that is as fast as possible and this usually makes the course not very technical.

If those that struggled to find the venue look at the BOF website it is showing that the event is at Langfield Common, Hebden Bridge and click on the grid reference and you can see the carpark is at Makinholes

Great event, really enjoyed my course, a good mix of legs.  Thought the map printing was very clear and the plastic paper stood up well.  Interesting how many people don't work out where the event is before setting off - a lesson for all organisers there I guess.

SUBJECT:   Map Not Found
If you get the map not found message, update your Java script it worked for me, my route looks just as bad on the bigger screen as it did on my laptop ! on the way to 10 (course 4)along side the marsh i looked away from the map, when I looked back I was looking at the marsh from 7 - 8 so I was looking for no 8 a depression rather than a knoll(although i had already being there !) to add to the mistakes I took the worst possible route from 10 to 11 and 16 to 17 ! strange as it may seem I did enjoy being out there on such a beautiful morning.

I get the map not found message on the computer at work and my main computer at home, (both have previously displayed the maps) on my laptop the map loads OK, the only difference I can think of is the laptop has just being updated with the latest Java.

SUBJECT:   Re: Statistics
Interesting reaction to the suggested change of Royds Hall to a score.

Personally, if it did change to a 'fun' mass start score, I would be far less likely to make the journey from Manchester. It is difficult to find other than score events around Christmas and New Year and I usually look forward to the pre-Christmas EPOC event as the last 'normal' event for two or three weeks.

Just an old fuddy duddy I suppose.

SUBJECT:   Statistics
Anthony G talks about statistics and numbers at the event. The other event in the 'area' or North West was the District at Caldbeck (a YBT event). A few MDOC and SROC went to this event swelling the entrants to over 300. Sometimes a better co-ordination of fixtures will help, last weekend was 'blank' for me.

SUBJECT:   Venue Grid Ref
Epocian is critical of Taunj and his ability to locate the event given all the info available on the web. Its a good job that i didn't go to the original grid reference on the main BOF fixture list, as this put the event centre in the middle of the Humber Estuary. Dont rely on everything you read on the web.

Anthony - if the Royds Hall event is changed from a bog-standard District to a Score, then I'll definitely come along. I can't speak for anyone else obviously, but something a bit different to the norm would certainly tempt me out at that time of year.

I don't know why the numbers were low: I have always enjoyed the EPOC events I have been to; the website with comprehensive post event info, fast posting of results, route gadget, this forum, are part of the attraction. This one was well worth the 1 hour 40 mins journey from sheffield, the best open moor event i have done, and in glorious weather. Excellent!

Only 39 EPOC competitors
Only 42 AIRE competitors
No other event nearby
5 M35s
24 M60s
8 M75s
Junior courses reasonable
5 W21s
3 W35s
14 W65s
5 W70+
17 IND

Can these figures suggest anything?

We are discussing whether to change our District event at Royds Hall on Dec 23rd to a Mass start fun 1 hour score event. Maybe have an informal AIRE/EPOC challenge. Every control worth 1 point. Bring a non orienteering friend, and their controls to be worth 2 points each. Would this encourage AIRES/EPOCS to come and bring lots of friends? They would then join and orienteer next year?

Despite a cracked rib that meant I was running as though on thin ice I did appreciate my course. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to gloat at those who'd taken the direct tussock route to 17 and I managed a "top" on the run in by going upstream of the ford : )

Good courses and I am pleased to say we seemed to have settled on this weekend as a regular for our Autumn Regional. Sunny Ogden last year. Sunny Langfield this and let's hope for Sunny Rishworth in 2008.

No excuse! You've obviously got an internet connection
simply use

then click on 'event'  - then 'location'
and choose between an OS map  or a Geograph link

SUBJECT:   Thanks (and two minor grumbles)
Thanks to EPOC for a very professional event (just what I expected from such a well organised club).

Special thanks to the planner who made the most of an area which would have degenerated into a physically nightmare in less skilled hands.

Two minor grumbles (just to keep you on your toes)

1. there are a couple of sections of the map were the rock features need remapping,

2. why didn't the course 11 and 12 runners get to see their maps in advance (might explain some of the long times on thess courses)?

Thanks again for an excellent event.

Next event, I'll make sure communication for entries is only by email  that this can be accessed by more than just me in the club. And there isn't a postal strike...

Quite a tough one, physically and technically. I enjoyed it and cursed it in about equal measure! It was good to have some juice there waiting at the finish too. Other events take note.
We also fell foul of the "6KM West of Halifax" thing. Didn't spot the sign on the approach from Todmorden, went some way past Hebden Bridge before deciding that "6KM West of Halifax" just had to be a mistake. Glad we did find the event though, on our second pass back towards Todmorden. Wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Thanks to the Planner and Controller for what was a challenging but ultimately very enjoyable course. A good mix of short technical legs and longer legs requiring a decent bearing, all of which managed to keep us out of the worst of the clag. Not the most runnable area in the world but a fine day certainly helped to keep thoughts of an early bath at bay.

SUBJECT:   Sticky Maps
Fantastic Courses, most technical on this area, I must be fitter than I thought, as the tussocks didn't seem that bad!
I thought EPOC had chosen the wrong weight of paper for the maps, until well into the course I discovered I had two maps stuck together!! Rebecca also found the paper on her map rather thick, until her last control when they came apart!! Something to think about for the future, perhaps that's why at the Scottish 6 days the maps were put under the box ready to go?

SUBJECT:   Parking payment
I agree with the point made by another competitor about blocking the entrance to the car park field at the narrowest point to collect money and give out details. Apart from that it was a very good event, blessed by glorious weather and fine views. (if you dare take your eyes off the ground for fear of tripping over a tussock or three). The navigation was technically not toooo difficult but I had a major battle with the terrain!
Cheers for a great event.

Good point about the incorrect course information. I was reassured that the climb was not as much as had been advertised so chose to do the long course instead of short. Turns out it had been advertised correctly after all. Oh well, I got a really good work out. Beautiful day; couldn't have asked for better; reminded me of Ogden Water last year on a similarly beautiful day when I had just started orientieering.

SUBJECT:   White course maps
Regional Event Guidelines chapter 4 says

there should be an opportunity for competitors on TD 1 and TD 2 courses to inspect their courses (and even discuss them with their parents) before they start. This could be achieved by making these courses available in the start lane or in the prestart area. See Rule 8.2.4.

Event Rules say

8.2.4 At Level 3 Events and below, courses planned to TD 1 and 2 should be made available to competitors in advance of their start time.

Why was this not permitted at today's event?

Other than that, thanks for a very enjoyable day out.

SUBJECT:   Feedback
Poor organisation was demonstrated by various factors:

1. Final details saying that the event was 6km west of Halifax when it was more like 16km. We ended up driving back towards Halifax after about 12km, assuming we had missed the sign... Perhaps relating the position of the event to Todmorden would have been better. Not everyone has an OS map!

2. Collecting money/handing out details on the steepest part of the entry field - do this when the cars are actually parked to avoid hold-ups!

3. Conflicting information given by final details on the web and those given out in the car park field... with the ones given out on the day being incorrect!

Despite this the planning was excellent, and I just wish I had concentrated more...
