Facinating watching Edwards GPS trace around course 4. Presumbly the animation is at the actual relative speed on each part of the course? ie. slower up the hills etc.
The Rishworth map is based on a very old (1985?) map. So presumably Edward had some way to make the control sites match the GPS trace, except for number 14?

I'd just like to add a comment on how good Rod Ryall's map of Rishworth now is - the result of hundreds of hours work over more than 20 years. I did a test run of course 4 about 3 weeks before the event, but on a scanned version emailed to me by Graham. This came over at a scale of about 1:12,000 and lacked the clarity of the original. Since the event I have had time to look at the updated map at leisure and appreciate the fine detail. Well done, Rod!
PS Nobody has yet claimed the compass or whistle.

For those of you who care about these things, I have put on "The Planners Optimum Route" What I thought was the best route for each course, using my knowledge of the moor. Such as runnability etc. Interesting to see the winners mainly stuck to it. However I would thourougly reccomend any planner do this as I have learnt a lot about the shaped of some of my courses. I n future I wil try to get a print out/ draw all the courses on one map just to see how they fit inside each other so to speak!

SUBJECT:   Edward Mellor's Procession
2 points Edward 1: If the mist had been down, which it was more times than not in the planning visits, it would not have been a procession!
2: Although courses were quite similar in the shape and lay out each course was planned with gaffles so that you had to be 100% concentrating and not follow someone onto a control that was not yours! I saw many do this!
In fact with about 3 to 5 more controls we could have had a series of mini mass starts! Something I am investigating for the future!

Edward, thanks for your comment. You are correct! We were using a cut down secure version of RG. It has now been updated, so perhaps someone might like to give GPS a go?

Thanks very much to Graham the planner, he certainly had some tricky controls that soon found me out with my poor concentration.

On moorland areas where routes are mostly similar there really isn't much value in duplicating a route that is already there. It is much more interesting in forest areas where route choices vary significantly.
53 out of (about) 300 must be quite representative of routes taken.

I enjoyed my course especially the variety between control picking on the slope and compass legs on the tops. I haven't been to Rishworth since the early event when I was still W21.

It's really good to see that Siarlot was so involved with the planning. (Make sure you print off some of the comments and put some evidence in your achievement/CV folder)

I think EPOC have an older version of Routegadget because it does not have the facility to upload the track from a GPS device. You may get a number of other people showing their routes if this facility was available. It is on the SROC version.

This was my first event back after 5 months and I thought it was a great use of the area. I did course 4 and really enjoyed the challenge although it did feel a bit like a procession at times. Thank you to organiser, planner and controller and all the volunteers on a cold, wet day.

Only 53 people have bothered to add their routes to Route Gadget. I know it was a shame that it was not up and running early the same evening.
Do you think it is worth the effort required from Results/Planner and Webmaster to bovver with this amazing facility for post event route analysis?

SUBJECT:   Course 4 Length
I was one of those who commented to Graham, as I finished, that I thought course 4 was a tad too long.

However, looking at the results, it was clearly me who was too slow! Training has been a bit lacking recently due to work commitments - must try harder.

Anyway, thanks to Graham and everyone else for their efforts. I did enjoy it in spite of being k*******d

HMM! Thanks for the note about the length of course 4 I used to do it lots, and I felt it would get a sub 60 minute winning time!

p.s.Lottie is very pleased about the junior courses as she  helped plan them!

Enjoyed Course 4, welcomed the length because I feel short changed by courses that take me less than an hour.  Long leg to No 10 was exhilarating, chose the route over the top which seems to have been the quickest although it felt very lonely up there with no-one else in sight most of the way.
Three children (JM1, JM3 and JM4) also enjoyed their courses, especially the 8 yr old on JM1. It can be difficult planning for juniors but ours appreciate the opportunity to get out on proper terrain, even on JM1.

SUBJECT:   Thanks
Thanks for putting on a good event - it must have taken a long time to plan, organise and control, as so many controls were a long way from a road.

It's a shame it clashed with the OMM and a shame more non-OMM competitors didn't make it too.

Now I'm looking forward to the contrasting urban events at the AIRE Yorkshire Pudding weekend... I've still yet to work out what kind of event I prefer - urban or 'wild' o...

Thanks again.

SUBJECT:   GPS
With the time spent on revisions for this event, the total time taken over the years on the Rishworth map now probably exceeds 1000 hours (the original survey @ 1:15,000 covered a much larger area).  Work this time was transformed by getting to grips with GPS. I reckon it could reduce survey time of open areas by a factor of 5.  I'd be interested to know of other mappers' experience of GPS.

I realy liked the course as it was fast but technical terrian around controls # 34. I was realy pleased with my run today only making very small mistakes at # 2,5,9. I realy enjoyed today, what ever the weather!

Thanks to Carl Edmonds. I didn't plan for the wind! In retrospect that long leg should have been done in reverse! With the wind behind!

Thomas Edmonds shame about the wind, I hope you didn't sink up to your neck in the mud too!

Heather of MDOC,Thank You- I liked course 4 a lot- dryer conditions would have led to faster times! When it was dry the steep descent was great, dig your heels in and fly down. All the rain made it treacherous, but if you came down between the paths it was OK!

Despite the weather (which actually only became bad as I was running my long leg on course 4 and had to battle against the wind and the rain),I really did enjoy the course and the area. I wasn't keen on the steep finish but that's me-I never like that to finish on, but I know some younger (and older!)were able to fly down the hill and when I see the splits I'll feel like a tortoise!! Thank you for the planning and the organising and to those who had to stand for ages on the start and finish-I'm sure you will have warmed up now!

I was having a good run until a gust of wind blew the map out of my hand as I was approaching control 5. I then wasted 18 mins trying to catch it!!! Not my best run, but it was good fun and I still managed to finish it all. Thankyou.

I believe that Course 4 was not to long and was very well planned. The only problem was the wind as it made it difficult to run fast!!!!

I thought it was fab! In hindsight I needed 3 more controls.

As a bit of fun how many controls did I use ? Any one who has seen the master map can't guess!!!!!
