Golcar Event

YHOA Sprint Championship

 Sunday 14th May 2017

Golcar & Leymoor

Final Details

Based on the Estates and ginnels of a former woollen village.

Terrain: The terrain is on Tarmac, with cobbles, paving stones and short grass.
On the morning event, “Leymoor” the paved pathways are shown on the map as narrow roads but are in the descriptions as path/track.
On the afternoon event the passageways known locally as ginnels are again shown as narrow roads on the map but in the descriptions as path/track.  Take care running down ginnels especially if it is wet.
The junior course will only cross minor estate roads.
None of the senior courses will have manned crossings.  Some cross secondary roads, take care!
Lampposts are not shown on the map but are frequently used as controls with alternative descriptions.
There is likely to be a fair 300 metres from registration/junior final finish; it is not shown as out of bounds but may not be the best route choice!
Map: New maps both A4 1:4,000 with 5m contours - Surveyed and drawn by Richard Payne assisted by Rod Shaw, 2017.
Travel: It is possible to come to the event by public transport. Buses 301,302 and 303 run at 30 mins intervals on a Sunday from Huddersfield bus station (ask for Town End, which is 2 mins from registration.)
There will be some parking on Manor Road adjacent to registration, there is limited parking at Town End.  Other parking on the Banks estate. Take Swallow Lane (road to Scapegoat Hill) and take first right avoiding driveways etc.
The grid reference of registration is SE097159.
The post code of registration is HD7 4QE.

Please note if travelling from the east on the M62 there is no exit at Junction 23. Leave at previous junction 24.

Golcar & Leymoor are on steep sided valleys as is the rest of this area of Huddersfield. The best approach unless using Sat Nav may be via Milnsbridge Traffic Lights and turn up Scar Lane.
Local History: After the event you may wish to visit the Colne Valley museum, it opens at 2pm and shows life in Golcar  200 years ago, it is manned by local, enthusiastic volunteers (small charge) and is 5 minutes walk from registration.
The local cafes are not usually open on a Sunday but a large co-op will be and is only 3 mins walk from registration.
The day before is “Golcar Lily Day” so there may be some remnants of the celebrations.  Ladies born in Golcar are known as lilies probably due to the influx of French Huguenots centuries ago.
Parking: Adhoc on streets adjacent to the Scout & Community Centre off Manor Road, HD7 4QE. Streetmap
Registration HQ and Toilets: at the Scout & Community Centre open from 9.30.
Signs to Registration at both ends of Manor Road.

Safety:  Whilst we have carried out full risk assessments of the competition areas and put in place mitigation of the risks we have found, please be aware that you take part at your own risk. Competitors will be responsible for their own safety.
Please be aware of all traffic, pedestrians and other competitors. It is a good principle, to pass other runners to the left. The courses pass through all types of urban environment with a wide range of underfoot conditions. Wet Yorkshire pavements an cobbles are very slippery as are the flags and grass. Competitors who are travelling alone are advised to leave named car keys at enquiries. All competitors must download as soon as possible at the end of their run whether they have completed the course or not.
The Junior course D is planned to avoid busy road crossings.
The Downhill Ginnels on cobbles are especially slippery if they are wet.
